I did a lot of research before selecting the W910 to replace my original stereo in a 2003 Suburban. I selected this unit because of its quick start-up time and clean, simple interface, and Alpine quality. About the boot-up time: Alpine advertises 6 seconds… and while this may be true for the start-up screen, the actual time to view an image from a backup camera is 12 seconds. Not the end of the world, and better than some other units, but it was not quite as advertised – otherwise it would have received 5 stars.

Navigation is simple and easy to use. Built-in free traffic is great. For security’s sake, it would be nice to require a PIN code to use the “home” and address book function, but I just use my neighbor’s address

Built-in HD Radio sounds awesome. Between the Pandora functionality, my iPhone music, and HD radio, I have no real need for satellite radio.

I added an HCE-200R rear camera and am very happy with the sharp image an multiple views. I plan on adding the 200F front camera soon which will really help my wife be more comfortable when she needs to drive this very large vehicle. NOTE – If you plan on using the 200 series cameras, note that the camera module connects to the head unit via an RCA plug. Alpine says you can select different camera angles directly from the INA-W910, but this is only for the directly-connected 300 series cameras. In my case, I needed to mount the controller pad that came with the 200R camera. Not a huge deal, just not as “clean” an installation as I would have liked.

My iPhone connects perfectly via bluetooth and the voice recognition is fantastic. When plugged into the cable, music on the iPhone can be navigated very quickly.

I used a video bypass module (do an internet search) so my 3-year old (she sits in the middle, center row) can enjoy her Sesame Street videos can watch her stuff while we are on the move – I have no plans to watch video while driving… that is just plain stupid.

I also used module that allows my steering wheel buttons to work. This was the only way I would be happy with a radio without a simple rotary volume knob. For me, a simple twist will always beat a tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap every time. Doesn’t anyone else find these type of controls annoying?

As for cons, and I will nitpick here because the unit is generally awesome: 1)the navigation display resolution could be a bit better (videos are great, however), 2) The overall system font is a bit strange as it seems like it was made for the visually impaired, 3) the clock font is so tiny – it is almost like reading the fine-print from a pharmaceutical company ad. Also, the clock is not visible when the unit is off. I thought it would be an issue, but there really is no need to turn it off, and 4) there should really be a hard button to turn off/turn down the display for night visibility.

I just bought the V25 system last week. Here’s a rather long review with points to consider…
The Good:
Setup is of the system is ridiculously simple – with guided instructions that show up on your TV and verify that you have everything connected correctly. Bose also includes a setup system called AdaptIQ that uses 2 microphones in place of speakers on a set of headphones (note: see “Bad” below). You wear them and sit in 5 different locations around your room while the system plays a series of test tones from each of the system speakers and the Acoutimass subwoofer. Then the system analyzes the readings and automatically sets up the system to match your particular room acoustics. It’s smart enough to know if you haven’t moved position between test tones, displaying on the screen “It doesn’t appear as though you have moved since the last test, please move to another position” (or a message to that effect).
The same intelligent design goes into their remote control unit. The system guides you through setting up the Bose remote control (very solid – almost seems like billet aluminum) to take over the functions of all your other remotes. Anyone can do this – Bose really has machine/human interface and usability down to a finely tuned science.
All speaker wires are color-coded and marked for polarity at both ends. They have RCA audio jacks on one end and solder-tinned bare wires on the other. Speaker connections are made without tools by pressing a button while inserting the wires into the clearly marked holes. The rear speaker wires are 50 feet long – easily long enough to allow drilling through the floor and running them across your basement ceiling to the exact location you need in your room (assuming you have a basement). I had the entire system setup in about 90 minutes – including running the wires as described.
It’s incredibly convenient to run every conceivable component, from Playstation, to iPod, to DVD, to Satellite or Cable TV, to Satellite radio, etc., all from the one Bose remote. When you press the “Source” button, a list appears on your TV that you can scroll through and the system switches to it. You have almost complete control of your iPod (I couldn’t get to the iPod setup menu via the remote). Song titles appear on your TV screen. If the source isn’t on or somehow got disconnected the system tells you how to fix it – right then and there. If your iPod is off, the system turns it on. It’s incredibly intuitive to use. Bose effectively re-wrote the book on designing for usability. The remote is a radio-frequency remote so it doesn’t need a line of sight to the unit and you can put the main unit in a cabinet or wherever. It works through walls. The remote also has a nice feature where you can temporarily turn on backlighting with the press of a button on the back, just above the battery cover (4 AA batteries, included). The only downside to the remote is that the buttons are a little too close together and the “Source” list disappears pretty quickly if you don’t select from it (about 2 seconds or so). That beats some systems where informational banners or messages stay on the screen so long that you miss whatever it is you’re watching (or worse, need to find the button in the dark to dismiss them).
The Ugly:
I lied. There is no ugly. The system is beautiful to look at, use and listen to. I gave it a 4 because of the contortions I had to go through to adjust it to my liking. I’ve since ordered the expansion kit and am going to try using the 901s in the living room (same room) only for my serious audio-only listening with the main 5.1 system turned off.

I’ve since bought the Bose expansion remote (RC-35S2) to use the 901s in the same room as a second set of speakers. This requires me to use a separate power amp for the 901s, but I had one anyway and am simply using it. Now when I want to crank up the music I simply turn on the 901s and can nearly shake the plaster from the walls. I can also use these with the V25 5.1 surround sound without any noticeable echo effect – so perhaps the Bose technical support guy has better ears than me – I simply can’t hear any echo. I’m all smiles these days and it’s like listening to all my old music for the first time. Good thing it’s winter and the windows are closed or I’d probably have the cops here.

The last GPS I got I couldn’t even figure out how to turn on…they have really come a long way as far as ease-of-use. This one…opened the box, easily assembled it onto the base with no directions, plugged it in, turned it on (okay, I had to go to directions for that, but they are very clear), followed all the steps (very intuitive – it walks you through it) and there I was – it had me pinpointed to my exact position in the parking lot – wow. So I plugged in an address, and yes, I’m old-school – I was shocked with this relatively inexpensive machine started TAlKING to me, nice voice too – very clear directions, tells you exactly how far to go before turning. This is the new model, which is why I got it, but it seems to have all the best features discussed in reviews of older models (I read a lot of reviews). Again, I’m not proficient in technology (my 11 year old niece has to help me with my phone and forget an I-Pod) but from my point of view this has all that a typical driver would need – I even think my even less-technically proficient parents would like it and I plan to try it out on them.
Update after a week: The screen shows several things I hadn’t noticed, like your speed, the speed limit for the road you are on (some roads, not all roads), the expected time that you will get to the destination, the direction (North, South, East, West) and how far it is in miles. It’s not distracting, as these notations are on the perimeter. The voice directions are very good, a warning prior to coming to a turn and then a ‘turn left on ____ St.’ when you get there and how far it is, as in ‘turn left in point-three miles’. And it tells you which side of the street (left or right) your final destination is on, which is very helpful on a busy street.
Also nice is the ‘Map’ feature: It’s simply a map of where you are, showing an automobile icon that moves as you go along…it shows landmarks, street names along with the speed limit and your speed so you don’t have to look down at the speedometer and guess if you’re going the speed limit and what it is. This can be used even when you don’t have a destination plugged in. Plus, the machine saves addresses so you just have to tap on an address from a list of places you’ve been, instead of retyping it. It also saves the cities, so you can pull it down from a menu instead of typing it in…so I would consider it generally ‘user-friendly’.
I got the portable Garmin Friction Mount to hold it in place (it’s a beanbag type thing) which is really great, as you can easily stow it on the floor so no one decides to ‘borrow it’ if they see it on the dashboard. Overall, couldn’t be more pleased…this one doesn’t have ‘traffic alerts’, so if you want ‘traffic’ there is another Garmin model that would be more suitable.

The Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is one of the better webcams I have had the opportunity to use over the years. Its stylish design fits easily on top of my LCD screen, while its functionality and features continue to impress. However, Vista functionality can be an adventure at a few times.

First, let’s talk about the good — picture quality. Let me put it to you think way: This webcam works better than my high priced Sony Camcorder at picking up video in low-light settings. I was simply amazed the first time I used it in a room with compact flourescents in the middle of the night and had such remarkable clarity and picture quality. Logitech credits this ability with something they call RightLight technology (in the video review I get it backwards — sorry Logitech!). Whatever you want to call it, it’s one of the features that definitely makes this webcam stand above the rest.

Next, the optics themselves are impressive. The 9000 utilized Carl Zeiss optics and you can tell the difference between this webcam and others. If you want to find out what makes Carl Zeiss optics so good, I encourage you to do a quick internet search or visit Wikipedia to look it up. It’s hard to describe in text how this optics setup helps — this is definitely something you have to see to believe.

Overall, I found it worked well with all the major instant messaging applications — AOL, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo. It also worked very well as a stand-alone camera taking incredible video and decent still shots — but remember, if you want to take a lot of still shots the quality you get from a product like this is fair at best compared to what you will get with a decent digital camera.

Now, let’s talk about a few things that weren’t so good about this webcam. The biggest struggle I had was with Windows Vista. Even though the box proclaims it is certified for Vista, I had numerous driver issues. The Logitech 9000 worked in Vista just fine, but for some reason at random intervals it wanted to re-install its drivers. One thing you should know if you purchase this camera is that when installing it you will want to make sure you have the installation program check for updates. I found there were two driver updates for the camera during install. However, even with these updates I continue to have that random re-installation issue.

The “helper application” that comes with the 9000 lets you do a lot of things — such as configure the webcam, add effects, etc. Although I had no problem configuring it I never got the effects to work. However, this wasn’t a big deal for me as I have no use for the special effects.

Overall, if you are looking for a quality webcam that can produce terrific results I highly recommend the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. Just be aware of potential Vista issues (which hopefully Logitech will solve). Other than that it’s so easy to use even beginners to computers will be able to get it up and running in no time. A quality webcam at a good price considering all of its features.

…the tedious hassle of separating (and later joining) the two (2) plastic halves of this case in order to access the microSD card. Now that I have a 32GB microSD card installed, this should not be an issue. It remains an issue if one needs to fully remove the G-Tab from the case, such as mounting it onto a vehicle adapter. Once the case is together, the microSD card slot is covered by the internal plastic case and the surrounding silicon shell. The power and volume buttons are covered as well, but have pre-formed silicon buttons to cover them for full functionality.

This Otterbox case provides the ultimate in protection for the G-Tab just short of being water-tight. The camera lens and flash on the rear of the G-Tab are still uncovered, but are surrounded by raised silicon and plastic. The front camera and light sensor are covered by the included screen protector (see NOTE: below). There are attached silicon plugs for the 30-pin cable and 3.5mm audio cable ports, but the two speakers and microphone holes are left uncovered for sound transmission.

NOTE: If you already have a nice screen protector on your G-Tab and you purchase the Otterbox Defender Model # SAM2-GTAB7-20-E4OTR, you have to either remove your separate screen protector or detach the screen protector that comes glued to this case. It seems that if you buy this case from a cell phone provider, you’ll get the case without a screen protector for you to purchase separately ($$)… I had an awesome Zagg invisibleSHIELD already installed on my G-Tab when I tried to use the screen protector that came with this case (I didn’t want to toss either of them) but once combined together, numerous air bubbles and a severe loss of touch screen sensitivity resulted. The Zagg protector is a pain in the neck to install, but leaves the front camera and light sensor exposed to actual lighting. The Otterbox protector (if you obtain the proper model) comes glued to the case, but covers the two front lenses from real lighting. I may just get another Zagg and just remove the included one from this case…

In all, a very good case to protect your G-Tab from bumps/impacts, scratches, fingerprints, and dust. The additional plastic shield/stand is a great help, as well. I would have given this case five stars if it wasn’t for the joining & separating of the internal plastic halves, but I’d still recommend it to other G-Tab Owners.

Truth in advertising first – my review is on a Square Trade desktop warranty, and while the computer I had bought was essentially new, it turns out to be a resale, but I don’t think that makes a difference in how things went. Purchasing was very easy, of course, it came as a link to the vendor web page, and as I had a previous experience buying a Square Trade desktop warranty (for a used Mac), I realized it was a very good value compared to other options. Anyway, the desktop suddenly stopped working after 5 months – it wouldn’t even turn on, and I had heard what was probably hard disk extra noise the 24 hours before, but I couldn’t test it since it wouldn’t power on at all. After trying alternate power outlets, etc., and confirming, I knew I would have to contact Square Trade to see what to do next. I was a little anxious about having to explain and cajole and negotiate and have to ship the machine somewhere, even though there is a recognized service company practically next to my house. While it wasn’t a very large desktop, it was much bigger than a laptop. However, it was only in the $300-400 range. I first made a notice of potential claim via the Square Trade website, which was very straightforward to use. They acknowledged receipt and said I should hear within 48 hours, which I did. However, they had for some reason classified my machine as a laptop, which may have something to do with the price, but as a result I picked up the phone and called their 800 customer service number. I was pleasantly surprised to get through very quickly to an obviously informed and empowered representative, and after reading my claim and hearing me expound a bit more on what the situation was, determined that with the lower value on the product and that it was not a laptop, it did not pay to either send it in or have it reviewed locally, and simply said they would settle by refunding my purchase price. He sent me the form I needed to fill out and sign and send back, and after they registered receipt of that form, they credited my PayPal account for the full original price of my product. The money showed up on the next “payment processing date” for their operation – apparently they only process a couple of times a week to keep costs down, which I understand – but it came just when they said it would. You also have the option of having a check mailed, but that takes longer. As stated above, this was my second Square Trade Warranty purchase, and the only claim I have needed to make, but the smoothness and competence of the process left me very impressed compared with dealings I have had with other online vendors in the past. One does not purchase a warranty expecting (or hoping) to have to use it, but then when you need to, and it works so well, it does give you an extra feeling of satisfaction. I highly recommend that you consider Square Trade whenever you are in the market for an extended/enhanced warranty.

Before I go on and on about how much fun we’ve had already with this camera, I wanted to point out a few things people should know before they purchase this product:

1) It does not come with its own USB cord, but if you already own a digital camera or MP3 player of some kind, chances are you already have a cord that will work.

2) They actually put in some quality Duracell batteries, instead of generic store batteries (it takes four AA batteries), but…

3) …it does not come with an SD card. You can still use this camera without one, but having a memory card (SD up to 32G) will greatly increase what you can do with this, esepcially when it comes to videos.

As far as the video recording feature goes, I was shocked at how well the sound and picture came through. You do not have to be next to a person to record their voice; I was able to record what my son was saying from across the room.

When it comes to photos, there are 25 little extra things you can add (ex: clown nose, vampire fangs, sunglasses) to a picture, as well as a morphing feature…and that’s just the in-camera editing features…there are more things you can do if you download some special software from online (but I didn’t want to add anymore stuff to my laptop). You can mix and match the extras to create dozens of unique looks (the instructions in the accompanying booklet were clear & concise, and any kid that can read independently could figure it all out on their own). We did about 100 different photos to test out the camera. My 6 yr old laughed his head off the whole time.

The swiveling lens was wonderful to use for self-portraits. There is also a little green check mark that pops on the screen to tell the child when it is optimal to snap the photo. It was extremely easy to figure out the controls & my son had no problem remembering how to use them.

While I’m not going to be throwing this down my stairs or off my deck to test the sturdiness, a simple drop on the floor or getting bumped in my son’s mini-backpack does not hurt this camera.

While this camera is marketed to grade-schoolers, I think even older kids would have a blast messing around with this one.

The first thing you will notice if you buy this product is the packaging. The manufacturers have made sure that both the car and the controller is in no way going to move in the packaging. Unfortunately this leads to a little bit of time on unpacking it. The car is actually screwed into the cardboard backing and the controller has 4 lock nuts locking it into the cardboard backing. Both of these are then covered with tape so it’s quite frustrating to actually get the car and the controller free of the packaging.
Once free however it’s very easy to setup, simply unscrew the battery compartments on both the car and the controller, insert your batteries (this takes 10x AA batteries, 6 for the car and 4 for the controller) and flick the switch to turn both the car and controller on and away you go.
The bad parts about this toy are :-
1. The batteries don’t actually last very long so over time this is going to be an expensive toy (cheaper to use rechargeables).
2. The screen size on the controller is tiny (only about 1 inch).
3. The resolution isn’t high at all (I was playing with this in my living room and had a hard time actually determining where the car actually was and what the camera was looking at. It was as if I didn’t know my own living room).
4. The camera in the car is fixed, you can’t move it (angle it), zoom it in or out etc.

Both the car and the controller are well built, will survive a few knocks and should last quite a while.
If you can live with the above points (they are actually fairly minor (this is a toy after all and not really a piece of spy equipment) except for the battery issue) then this is actually quite a fun little toy. Recommended.

This RC truck is very similar to other Tonka RC’s, but it has a recording and replay feature rather than the Monster Lift as an example. The replay feature works but doesn’t add much fun. It feels like a gimmick to provide differentiation. The kids enjoy the Monster Lift feature on the other Tonka RC much more. It turns the low riding and long truck into a monster truck.

The battery life is very poor. The instructions say to charge it for 4 hours to get 15 minutes of run time. Depending on how much you are truly driving the care while you play with it, 15 minutes of run time might be around 30 minutes of play time. Frustrating.

It seems to be very sturdy like our other Tonka RC is. We’ve crashed it a lot and there are no signs of any problems.

The first few times the kids played with this RC, they thought it was very fun. “Awesome” was the word that they used. After the third time, they lost interest. They haven’t asked to pull it out in weeks. Definitely, the poor battery life is part of the reason, but it just doesn’t have a lot of replay value.

Let me start off by saying that I don’t think I EVER downgraded something because of the packaging….until now. I cannot explain to you the level of frustration I had in trying to untangle, untie, unravel and cut almost every little piece. Since this is the way it came from the manufacturer I am taking off half a star. Not only for the waste of time and the frustration, but more importantly because if a child is trying to do it they will likely break things. Even using a scissor, it took much more time than I would think necessary to get everything liberated. Once everything was taken apart, it was simple work for my 6 year old daughter to put everything together…..and she LOVES it! Once my frustration died down, and after I put the door on the plane, I noticed a minor design flaw. The door to the plane has a little door within it and if the plane is at just the right angle, the little “doggy” door opens into the plane and doesn’t allow the regular door to open….of course, my daughter could careless and she has been very happy playing with it. There are enough pieces to occupy a child for quite some time, as witnessed by my daughters quiet playing. The plane opens completely, allowing for storage of all the pieces. The regular plane door comes off relatively easily….not a complaint, just noting that it will be less likely to break because too much pressure will just pop it off. It doesn’t come off so easily as to make this a bad point, just easy enough to make it a good one. If your child likes Little Pet Shop, but it, they will love it. I get plenty of hugs from my daughter, and that, to me, is priceless! Be aware that there are items that are definately choking hazards/dangers, so I would not recommend this for really young kids.

I got my trampoline in late March and within 3 weeks the mat tore on the side where the bungee cord goes through. I called customer service asking to buy a replacement mat and they had me send the whole trampoline back to them and they sent me a new one a few months later when it was back in stock. So far, there has been no tear and my son loves it (had it for 3 weeks now). He jumps on it at least once a day for five minutes to get his energy out. It’s nice if you have the room for it and the legs fold under to easier storage (also the handle can come out). Set up was fine. I did it by myself and it took about 15 minutes from start to finish. When threading the bungee cord, keep the mat as centered as possible while you finish or one end will be closer to the side than the other. I put a bean bag in front of the trampoline because it is possible for your child to jump too high and almost flip over the top. It hasn’t happened yet, but it has come close to happening. I’d recommend this toy to anyone. And, if you have any problems, don’t hesitate to call customer service.

I have been using electric toothbrushes for more than 10 years and this thing is hands down the best one on the market.
I purchased this toothbrush a few weeks ago and even upgrading from my older Sonicare, I’ve noticed a huge difference.

I never thought I had sensitive teeth in the past – I just thought the feeling I had after brushing was normal. Using the sensitive setting on this toothbrush gives a better clean than I got in the past and doesn’t leave my teeth feeling like they vibrating afterwards. Also, about once a week I would have some gum sensitivity where there would be redness and or bleeding which has gone away.

The 30 second interval timer is great as I like to zone out while brushing and this makes sure I move from each section of my mouth when needed. With my old school Oral B toothbrushes I would sometimes go over the two minute timers as my teeth didn’t feel super clean but I haven’t come close to experiencing that with this brush.

My wife also uses and love this toothbrush. As of now we have been two weeks without recharging this thing – we are trying to see how long it will really go. It comes with a travel charger which is super nice, but really, if the battery lasts this long when would you really need it? If for some reason you do need to charge it it comes with the handy charging glass to keep in your hotel room.

This is really the top tier toothbrush, as silly as it sounds. They have a 30 day guarantee so there really is no reason not to try it if you’re considering it.

I really do look forward to brushing now and I’ve been using electric toothbrushes for over a decade – that’s saying a lot.

I am very satisfied with this product. User friendly, it takes great, clear, sharp photos. I just recently went to Costa Rica and the quality of the pictures was awesome (not to mention CR!!) I am not tech-saavy but this is an easy camera for me to use … just point and shoot, however, there are some aps that make for some fun photo-shooting too, like the fish-eye and color enhancement features. I originally wrote a review entitled, “Monstrously dissatisfied.” Out of the box, my Jawbone Jambox sounded horribly distorted when playing my laptop’s music. Before returning it I searched the web one more time to see if there was anything that could be my fault and found a useful thread called, “Terrible Sound Quality” (link below) on Jawbone’s site. There I discovered that my Apple MacBook Air had two different drivers and the wrong one was selected, not that I was prompted at any point in the installation by either Jawbone or Apple. I also read that no one knew how to select the right driver on my operating system, Snow Leopard 10.6. With a little poking around I figured it out and now I think the Jambox is behaving the way it’s supposed to.

I give the Jambox 4 stars because:
(a) it does a good job as a bluetooth speakerphone with my iPhone, improving a bit on the iPhone’s capacity to do that job itself. I used it in my hotel room while it was charging, right out of the box. It was a couple of feet away from me as I worked and I could hear the other parties clearly and they could hear me. Then again at a meeting in an office when a speakerphone was needed impromptu, I whipped it out and there was no fuss, just performance.
(b) As an external bluetooth speaker it provides fine quality – not superb – but, for its size it’s better than any of the other solutions I have purchased over the years. It’s handy to have no cords (a corded set of speakers by the same price would outperform the Jambox). However, it is wonderful to have this wireless box for both my iPhone and laptop when I work around the house (my home office), and I have even used it in the car enjoyably.

On another note, my 12 yr old just picked it up and took it downstairs to see how far it could travel from my laptop and still pump out the music. It was impressive. He made it all the way downstairs to the other side of our house before losing the connection.

I am neither a pilot nor a “gamer” but I used to enjoy MS Flight Simulator, and when I went exclusively to a Mac several years ago my only regret was that I has to leave Flt.Sim. behind. X-Plane 9, which I just discovered, is even better than I remember Flt.Sim.

I bought an inexpensive joystick (Logitech Extreme 3-D Pro, about $35 at Amazon), and then installed X-Plane 9 on my iMac. The installation took about an hour but it went flawlessly. The joystick was recognized by the program, and I was easily able to calibrate it by following the very clear instructions.

I selected the Cessna 172 as my trainer plane and a local airport as my home field (again following the clear instructions). The first flight was not a thing of beauty but I was able to take off, circle the field, and make a safe, albeit shaky, landing.

This is not a toy and some of the “gamers” who complained about the lack of instructions or the problems in controlling their aircraft were probably using jets and/or multi-engine aircraft for their initial flights, and expecting instant gratification.

I have substantial learning to do (and it’s a steep curve) but even at this early stage, I can say with confidence that this is a superb and flexible program which is well worth the investment of money and time for anyone who wants to enjoy a true flight simulator on their Mac.

I’ll begin by saying that this game has exceeded my expectations. Upon watching online videos, I figured this would be a watered-down Mario Galaxy title, but boy, was I wrong! The videos DO NOT do the game justice. I didn’t think Nintendo would have been able to do it, but this is by far the first Mario game in a long time that has retained the uniqueness and charm of the series as I remember it on the NES. New Super Mario Bros. Wii came really close, but Super Mario 3D Land does it for me.

~ First, the power-ups:
The Tanooki suit’s revival in this game is genius. You can hover with Mario’s tail for a while and tail-strike enemies just as you can in Super Mario Bros. 3. I’m a little bummed you can’t actually fly this time around, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t have worked as well in this title anyway. Fire Mario feels great, too. I haven’t played far enough into the game to obtain the Boomerang Bros. suit or Statue suit, but I’m sure they will be awesome too based on what I’ve seen thus far.

~ Second, the levels:
While at first I thought the levels in this game seemed vacuous and dull and too similar to the levels in the Galaxy series based on online videos I’ve seen, my first hands-on experience with this game proved my initial thoughts to be WAY incorrect. The level designs are brilliant. The designers have packed so many obstacles, enemies, warp pipes, music note blocks, and hidden areas into the levels that the game stays exciting throughout. Also, the levels are not too long since you are timed. Thus, you can get through a level in a few minutes, but if you need more time there are stopwatches you can collect along the way to add valuable seconds to your overall time limit for the level. These come in handy if you want to do some exploring for the three hidden coins in each level. If you’re like me and occasionally grow tired of some of the longer levels from Galaxy, then you’ll be happy with the quickness yet depth of the levels in 3D Land. The levels look AND feel like actual Mario levels in their design. To top it all off, you’ll recognize remakes of some classic Super Mario Bros. 3 tunes, as well!

~ Third, the controls:
Mario’s signature moves are back: crouch, backflip, long jump, side somersault, wall jump, and ground pound. There is also a new move – the roll – in which Mario can roll forward from the crouching position. The only move that hasn’t been brought back is the triple jump, but I don’t feel as though it would’ve been useful in this style of Mario game anyway. The moves are easy to execute with the layout of the 3DS’s thumbstick and buttons. Furthermore, controlling Mario feels completely natural. For instance, running with Y and tail-striking enemies along the way is both easy and fun to do! As I mentioned earlier, the Tanooki suit’s signature moves are back, too, such as hovering and tail-striking, both of which feel great.

~ Fourth, the graphics and the 3D:
The graphics in this game are on par with, if not better than, the graphics in the Galaxy series. Mario, the enemies, and the levels all look stunning. The 3D effect in the game looks stunning, too, and it’s awesome to see Mario in full 3D for the first time. The 3D also helps with depth perception, and, as anyone can guess, the ability to see in 3D certainly comes in handy for a platforming title such as Mario in which you have to make perfectly executed jumps. Also, in addition to the 3D slider bar, you can also control the 3D effect by choosing from two 3D options while playing that will provide either a shallower or deeper depth of field, so the 3D is more customizable in this 3DS game than in any other.

FINAL THOUGHTS
If you don’t own a 3DS yet but want one, then this is the time to get it. Super Mario 3D Land, maybe aside from Zelda: OoT or Star Fox 64 (both of which are remakes, anyway), is the best original game on the 3DS, hands-down, and it combines everything gamers adore from Super Mario Bros 1 and 3, and Super Mario 64. From the controls to the level design, every aspect of this game retains the fun and charm of the original NES Mario titles that I remember so fondly but have not seen in any Mario title in recent years.

This product is great and the software is fantastic.

This product saves people from having to spend 10k on ‘solutions’ from dinosaur HT companies like Crestron to get outdated giant brick remotes to control all their HT devices; usually on a equipment rack inside a closet. Using a tablet is the future of remotes. It’s no wonder this device is consistently sold out because all the HT installers are gobbling them up.

On the downside, there were just a few situations where I lost blue-tooth synchronization and others where I had to bring my beacon back from sleep by touching the top button.

Overall, great product.

To DIJIT:

Please add haptic options so the IPAD and iphone vibration features can work when pressing a button. This is major missing feature and these IOS devices have this function built-in; might as well use them.

Please create the ability to temporarily remove the swipe un-lock from my IOS device if it went to sleep with DIJIT running. I hate having to unlock my device every time just to hit mute or change a channel. I should just have to touch the screen to bring it back to life and then push the GUI button.

Please add Playstation 3 support, the IOS device already has blue-tooth, this is major limitation; especially since I can control all my other consoles.

To Griffin

Please add an AC adapter option, this ‘AA’ requirement is not good considering how much time is spent watching TV and movies. Having blue-tooth running all the time can’t be good. I would be surprised if I got the claimed 2 months battery life, which doesn’t seem that long anyway. Let’s not add to the landfill problem. I should be able to install this device in a rack and never think about it. Every time I go into my movie room, I have to change the batteries on this thing, ridiculous. I may jury-rig the battery terminals to a same-spec wall-wort to avoid this issue.

Please add a firmware update connection on the beacon. I can’t believe there are no bugs with this device, unless all this is just a dumb repeater.

Please allow changing of the sleep timer to 4 hours, instead of 60 minutes. Most movies are over 60 minutes and I hate having to bring my unit out of sleep mode.

I am a sucker for special edition game gear and and I am particuarly impressed by this controller because it actually looks better in person. I have the Gears of War 3 controllers as well but I prefer the Modern Warfare controller for two reasons. The thumb sticks are smooth whereas the standard controller thumb sticks have four small and rather uneccessary bumps. The other reason being that the surface of the controller feels slightly textured in comparrisson to the glossy Gears of War controllers which can get a bit slick during gameplay. If in need of a new controller, I’d definatly recommend this over the standard or GoW versions.

We had a hard time finding a double stroller for our 2 year-old and newborn due to limited trunk space (Honda Civic). This stroller fits in easily without any disassembly and even leaves a little room for other things in the trunk. It was easy to put together and is surprisingly easy to open and close. Also, it handles very well for a tandem double stroller. My older son loved riding in the front seat and our Graco infant seat clipped in easily to the back; also, that seat fully reclines so it will also be a nice option for the baby when he’s a little bigger. Both seats have nice canopies to keep out the sun and help with rain protection. One drawback is the main storage basket is not easily accessible when the back seat is fully reclined, but we are able to stash our diaper bag and a few other small items under the front seat with no problem. For the price, this is a great option!

I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 7 week old and when I was pregnant with my second I was up night after night looking for a double stroller that would fit my needs. I wanted something that would fit through the doors at the store but I could also take to the zoo or in the grass. I first purchased a Sit N Stand but then returned it because of the quality, lack of storage, and realizing my 2 year old was no where big enough to be in the back sitting OR standing. So then I purchased this and I couldnt be happier. I’ve taken it to stores, down dirt paths, in the grass, down cracked sidewalks and it steers great! It is very very heavy, yes, but anything that is made well and will withstand some bumps and bruises will be very heavy. My infant GRACO carseat fits in the back and my toddler sits in front. It’s very easy to fold up and down with one hand. There is big storage underneath for bags and I love the sun shields. My only complaint is that the front seat will not fold down if my toddler wanted to take a nap but who am I kidding…like that happens anyway! Hope this helps you but I would definately recommend this stroller for an all purpose.

I have twin boys and we have had this stroller since their birth. It’s a great stroller and I highly recommend it for anyone with twins. It easily accepts car seats, which is essential with newborns. It works great now that they are toddlers. We have a side by side stroller as well, which is nice, but this keeps the boys out of each other’s hair. They can’t touch each other or bother each other. I can put packages I buy when I’m out shopping in the compartment under the stroller, which is very good sized. I can have my drink, my boys drink, my cell phone, purse, coat, etc. hanging from the back and there is still room to put kid “stuff” in the stroller. It’s very sturdy too. My only complaint is the weight. It’s pretty heavy and can be a pain to lift into the car.

We have had this carseat for a year now and are about to purchase a second one for our son. We put our daughter in it when she was almost 1 yo. I chose this because at the time I was driving a Honda Civic and it fit wonderfully (Rear facing and forward facing. We started her rear facing with the carseat reclined. Once she was 1 year and 20 lbs we turned her around.) Now we have a minivan but I still prefer this one to the larger/bulkier Marathon and Boulevard. A good friend has the later and now that her sons are older she is switching to a booster anyway. Here are the high points for me:
1) Easy to install! Some carseats take a rocket scientist to install but this one is fairly simply. We use the Latch option. One trick that helped me when I was installing it in our Civic was to snap side that is closest to the center of the car first, with the carseat turned in toward the center of the car. Then I turned the carseat to face forward and snapped in the other side. Then stuck my knee in the seat and used my body weight to press it down while tightening both sides. I’m tall and if I can get it into a Civic while being 6 months pregnant I think almost anyone can do this. It just takes a couple of minutes. Our minivan is much easier to get it into, because it has the latches exposed. My Honda had the latches hidden down between the seat with a small button to indicate where the latch bar was so it was kind of a guessing game, but that was really the car’s fault, not the carseat.
2) Safety, safety, safety! (Which perhaps I should have mentioned first) I think it’s pretty much accepted that Britax puts out great, quality products which have superior safety ratings. Like another reviewer said, check out their site for the rigorous safety testing they do.
3) Comfortable and good looking. Even if my car was parked in the sun, the fabric on this would not be that hot. The buckles do get hot, but the fabric is very nice and gentle on kids’ bare legs/arms. (The crotch guard will keep the buckle from touching them.) Also I love the color which is gray but has some shimmer. Washes well and is durable. We’ve had it over a year and it still looks brand new with no staining or fading.
My bottom line is that this is a great carseat! My sister and close friends all have the Boulevard and I just don’t see the point, unless you are planning on keeping your kid in it until they are 15 years old.

I started my search for noise cancellation headphones because I couldn’t enjoy my music at home with all the neighbors dogs barking. I first went to Best Buy and tried out the Bose QuietComfort 15 and various Dre Beats. Unfortunately, Soul’s are only available online but I’m glad I trusted the reviews and ordered them w/o completely knowing what I was getting into. The Soul’s noise cancellation is amazing if not better than what I remember at the store from the Bose QuiteComforts. These are very comfortable to wear too. After 4 hours, my ears were a little warm but nothing that required me to lift them up periodically to breathe as I had read about the QuiteComforts.

In regards to sound quality, at first I was a little disappointed because I was looking for a little more base and that was one place Dre Beats shined. Then I realized that the Soul’s don’t try to drown you out with base but actually PLAYS your music in a way I’ve never heard. If you really want to listen to your music, and I mean every note, chord, string, cough… these headphones are for you. I’m absolutely mesmerized by all the music I was missing in my music.

Celebrity endorsed fads or not, the underlying company that produced these headphones took advantage of the marketing opportunity and made in my opinion a great product. Worth $300? For me, yes.

i was excited to be able to review headphones. I have never treated myself to a good pair and just did not know what I was missing.

Of course the first thing I noticed was the case. I was impressed. It is strong, sturdy and very professional looking. You know when they are in there they are safe. Now about the headphones……I love these headphones! Everyone, in my family loves these headphones and sneak into my computer room and try to take them. I might have to lock them up when they are not in use. That says a lot for a product.

The sound quality is suburb, crisp and clear, and they are stylish. I like to use them with my computer, because I can wear them for hours and they still feel comfortable. They come with an adapter and two cables, one of which has an in line controller. I do not have an IPOD or I PHONE but they work very well with my DROID. If you love music, these headphones are a must. I do believe I will be getting a second pair for the family to use or I may lose these forever. Very good product.

This anime series covers 26 episodes and presents itself through 3 main arcs with some lapses of time occurring between the arcs. The series is a spy action thriller with a deep story that will keep you engaged in this world of mystery and discovery. Twists and turns in a world where the main character is on a quest of identity, self, love, strength, and just about a dozen other things. All the characters feel real and it was just a series that I really enjoyed. I tend to refer to this anime as the modern setting of the anime Claymore. There is not connection between those two anime but I feel like the are on par quality wise but this series isn’t as mystical and is better off in the area of plot. Also, I’m not sure what the other reviewer had mention about this being the first season of two. As far as I know this is the only season and it is worth buying. If there is another season let me know!

I will be buying this without a doubt, an amazing anime not to mention having it in both bluray and dvd is without a doubt an added plus. I can’t wait!

The greatly anticipated second series of Downton Abbey picks up two years on from the first series in 1916, in the middle of World War 1. Downton Abbey has been converted into a convalescent home for injured servicemen and the action covers the period from the Battle of the Somme up to the end of the war. As in the first series, topical events of the period, political, economic and military are covered.

The wartime scenario and the convalescent home setting provide an excellent background for some interesting story lines. The combination of excellent plot lines, great acting and the superb setting display all that is best in TV period drama. This time round we have eight more episodes to add to the seven in the first series. As befits wartime, the costumes are not as flamboyant as in the first series but they are thoroughly researched and appropriate to the period.

There continue to be many superb individual performances but mention must be made of Maggie Smith. What a stroke of genius to cast her as Violet. She dominates every scene she appears in and often has some very funny lines.

The UK has a long tradition of producing fine period dramas and this is the most successful since the early 1980s when Brideshead Revisited (25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition) took the world by storm. Peak viewing figures in the UK are 11m which is an astounding number for that market. It is pleasing to learn that a third series is already planned and we now know that this will cover an 18 month period from 1920 to 1921. This one is likely to run and run and I would not be surprised to see Downton Abbey continuing up to the 1930s eventually.

This series is, in my opinion, CLAMP’s greatest masterpiece. X was the first CLAMP series I was introduced to, and has remained my favorite. To explain why this series is great, I have outlined the pros and cons below.

~Artwork – As with all CLAMP’s work, the artwork and character designs are detailed and beautiful. Some of the characters look very similar to other CLAMP characters, but some are completely unique to X. Some of the imagery is very impressive, and with a wide range of characters (the Dragons alone add up to 14) and a wide range of situations leads to a wide range of different types of scenes that show CLAMP’s creativity and imagination.
~Music – The music for this show is some of the best I’ve heard in any screen production. The main theme, Destiny, is very memorable and beautiful. I bought the soundtrack and Destiny is one of my top played songs, despite being instrumental.
~Story and Characters – X boasts a complicated story with complex characters. The cast of characters is large and many of them have their own story to contribute. The interactions between the Dragons of Earth and the Dragons of Heaven are quite realistic – even the people wishing for the destruction of humanity are only human themselves and this especially evident when they encounter someone from the opposite side.

Just saw this film at the Tivoli. Never heard of it and chose it spur-of-the-moment. The best film of its kind I’ve seen since The Tree of Life.Mill is based on a famous painting by Pieter Bruegel called “Way to Calvary,” which depicts the Crucifixion.

The great Rutger Hauer plays Bruegel, Michael York his patron, and York’s wife, Charlotte Rampling, Bruegel’s reference for Mary, Jesus’ mother.

This film seems much longer than its 90 min. running time due to a protracted opening where we are presented with a series of scenes that seem random, mostly scenes of everyday rustic life: a man and his wife eating breakfast in a mill, men chopping down a tree, a man and his wife having a picnic and eating bread, a woman breastfeeding her child, a spider web. This goes on for around 45 mins. and in this time there is almost no dialogue, just lingering images that look like museum paintings. This is the only thing that saves the movie’s first hour, it’s beauty, because there aren’t 2 scenes that fit together logically. Like 2001 or the first Alien feature, this slow pace allows the viewer to appreciate the art of the film. It’s truly a wonder.

Finally, the dialogue comes in with a scene showing Bruegel sitting and all of the disparate scenes together on a canvas. He then provides the context in which to see these various scenes and magically all of the previous scenes makes sense.

From this point, the film plays out to its inevitable outcome. A very good film. Not mainstream. Aside from a couple of very brief torture scenes, there’s absolutely no action to speak of. This is an art film and the number of heads in the theater attested to this. But if you’re looking for a good way to spend 90 mins of your life I can think of no better expenditure of time.

I guess sales weren’t what they’d hoped and I’ve been longing for my Pepper fix for nearly six years! Thankfully, Shout Factory comes through once again, resurrecting this groundbreaking ’70s series from oblivion.

This set will consist of the 24 episodes that aired during the 1975-76 TV season on NBC. I am most looking forward to the segment that features Donna Mills as a crazed woman who put her baby up for adoption, and now will go to any lengths–even murder–to get that baby back. The guest stars this season read like a who’s-who of Hollywood from the ’50s to the ’80s including Erik Estrada, Diane Baker, James Darren, Joan Collins, Joanna Pettet, Gerald McRaney, Amy Irving, Jeannette Nolan and plenty more! The guest stars are the gravy but Angie Dickinson, who’s effortless sexuality oozes out of the screen and reliable Earl Holliman are of course the meat-and-potatoes of the show.

When HBO first announced the showing of Boardwalk Empire, my calendar became marked with bright red highlighter. Every time I saw an image of actor Steve Buscemi in his dapper 1920′s attire (my favorite decade in American history), my anticipation grew. I began to research, realizing that Martin Scorsese and producer Terry Winter (The Sopranos), and I was nearly breathless with anticipation.

What drew me to Boardwalk Empire? It was a combination of items. I love the 1920s. There was a romance to that particular era, evident in the films, the clothing, and the music. America was blossoming from a gawky teenage girl and into the full flower of beauty during that magical era. Much of the growing process involved film, music, gangsters, and Prohibition.

When HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE premiered, I was as giddy as a kid on Christmas morning.

Scoresese and Winter didn’t let me down. Boardwalk Empire chronicles the life of Enoch (Nucky) Thompson (Steve Buscemi). Nucky Thompson is slick, smooth, and runs the Boardwalk with a suaveness that rivals the cunning of a fox. I don’t think Scoresese could have found anyone better than Buscemi to play Thompson, for he’s able to emit the perfect persona with his sly, crooked smile and darting eyes. Yes, Buscemi fits my image of a gangster of the era, more realistic than any Hollywood has ever attempted to portray in the past. Buscemi is not a handsome man, instead he has that down home reality to his features that makes him more believable as a human being with every close-up that is filmed. Human is what Nucky Thompson is, aspiring for more on the boardwalk. Nucky is complex in his greed and maneuvering, and all the while revealing the little bit of a compassionate heart that he still has beating within him. This heart is shown in his behavior toward Margaret Schroeder (Kelly MacDonald), a pregnant woman who endures a horrific beating from her drunken husband.

The storyline of Boardwalk Empire leaps from section to section, high paced, filled with action and the underground gangland activity that was so prevalent during the time. There are startling little bits of history that will make any fan of the era and mobster history smile with pleasure. My favorite clip was a war scarred Jimmy Darmody ( Michael Pitt) having a conversation with a very young Al Capone (Stephen Graham), while they waited to drive their bosses about town. (No, Al Capone didn’t start out his gangster career as the headman;he started at the bottom).

My overall opinion of Boardwalk Empire–Excellent and stunning. I felt as if I had been drawn into a perfectly portrayed world of the past, from the movements of Prohibition, Women’s Suffrage, and into the realm of organized crime. Beautifully written for the screen (adapted from the book by Nelson Johnson, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City), Boardwalk Empire is a must have in your mobster collection.

The Shout Factory has a tentative release date listed in their catalog as December 13, 2011, which is close to Christmas. The Shout factory website shows a late December 2011, or an early release date sometime in 2012. This is promising news.

Like Emergency, Adam-12 was a quality show, and I know some real life police officers. I like to see police officers on TV who don’t run around firing guns on a daily basis, and I never remember Reed and Malloy riding on car hoods, and I never remember Malloy pulling over an attractive young lady just to get a date. In seven years on TV, Reed and Malloy only had four police cruisers (counting the beast). If a real police officer went through four cars in four weeks, at the very least he would probably be assigned to foot patrol or desk detail.

Another police show I would like to see come out on DVD is Night Heat, which was a Canadian production.

This might be, and with absolutely no hyperbole, the funniest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. X-D

Without trying, completely spontaneous and genuinely insightful – our man Karl Pilkington is hands down the funniest guy living on Planet Earth today.

Certainly there have been moments – in my own life and those that come from the entertainment field – that have had me in tears, crying so hard from laughing. The first time I saw the late Sam Kinison, the moment when a friend ate his entire meal then discovered a fat cockroach at the bottom of his bowl, the combat/spear and hippo birth scenes in ‘Ace Ventura, When Nature Calls’. Moments that I’ll carry with me the rest of my life.

But this guy Karl – this guy is beyond humorous. He’s like the Dalai Lama of comedy, delivering the rawest, most truthful, insanely funny things ever uttered by man.

He’s added to my moments of hilarity by a hundred fold.

And to be fair, everyone who ‘gets’ this show, owes a debt to Ricky Gervais. Despite the fact that he’s a self-absorbed, cruel, arrogant smartass, the bottom line is: Without his efforts there would be no one outside of England who would understand, could possibly understand, the phenomenon of Karl Pilkington.

There is NO WAY any single post or review can adequately capture the essence of Karl – the purest laughs he creates. No way.

So I’ll say this: Watch, listen and be in awe.

I only wish there were a 17-star rating on Amazon.

UPDATE 6.1.11: Fans may or may not have heard that, despite years of protests and absolute refusals (remember his famous “nip it in the bud” scene in Peru), Karl has agreed to a second season of ‘An Idiot’. Tentatively called “The Bucket List”, it’s filming as I write this. And if you want to get an INSANELY HILARIOUS preview – check out the podcast found via several different download services. There’s no video, but Ricky plays a recorded phone message of our guy stuck in Alaska! I won’t say anymore. Check it out and I promise – you’ll end up crying it’s so funny. Note: I know I’m a nerd, but who cares. I’ve reviewed Hetalia Season One and Paint it, White. Now is the time for the long awaited Hetalia: World Series – Season 3!
Also, I watched most of it on youtube, so I don’t want to hear people complaining and ranting about reviewing a product that hasn’t been released yet. It’s called internet, idiots.

Anyway, World series will be my favorite because the cast brought in Spain, Hong Kong(can’t wait to hear his voice) more Prussia, the Nordics (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland), more Prussia, and more awesomeness to the Hetalia world. Even though I watched almost all of the episodes, I’m actually just eager to hear Sweden call Finland his wife in the English version, if I don’t hear that or if they change the script, I’m gonna cry!XD

Basically, Prussia takes over the entire show(Hungary will get him, trust me. Don’t mess with her man!), you’ll be seeing some episodes with Spain trying his hardest to take care of rude/cute Romano,and others(like America dragging England’s car up a hill for an hour just to ask him for the keys. LOL! Those are the only things I’m gonna spoil, but the rest you’ll find out on your own.

Like I said in season one of Hetalia, if you’re the type that doesn’t like to laugh at yourself because of some old/new stereotypes, don’t look at it and complain about it, but if you’re the type that doesn’t care and still laughs at it because some is true and some is false, than this is this is the show for you.

The Man From London is honestly one of my favorite efforts from Bela Tarr, easily on my short list of great directors. It’s been savaged by fans and critics alike, mostly for two reasons. First, it’s the first Tarr film to be exposed to a wide audience upon release. Finally his buzz had reached the point where this film’s premiere was an actual event, so a lot more people who weren’t Tarr fanatics saw it and slammed it. Let’s face it, he’s one of the most divisive directors of all time, and 90% of the general audience would probably walk out of any of his films 5 minutes in.

The second problem is that it’s a really hard film to pin down, even if you are a Tarr lover. The Man From London feels far more consciously experimental than his previous work. Liberated from his native setting of Hungary, he creates a more manufactured sort of reality for his characters. Atmospherics are piled on, almost like the whole movie takes place in some moody landscape painting. My suspicion is that this put his fans off guard from the get go, and resulted in a lower reception. But that’s really what sets it apart in my mind. The mood is so incredibly thick that you can almost literally reach out and cut the fog with a knife while watching. The usual Tarr trademarks are here (endless 10 minute takes, black and white photography, eternally miserable characters), but little touches make this effort surprisingly suspenseful. Several scenes get you used to watching a whole lot of nothing, so when a brawl breaks out in the distance it’s a shock to the system. One crucial event occurs behind closed doors. Several minutes are spent regarding that door, and my breath was held for practically all of them.

Like most films, this one isn’t perfect. One scene involves Maloin buying clothes from two fast-talking tailors whose comic relief is as out of place as an Adam Sandler cameo. It’s the one moment where the film’s mood is totally broken, and it takes a minute or two to get back into the swing of things. Also, a few scenes in the bar seem to contain a cameo from the drunks in Satantango, which is just a bit odd (this might be unintentional, since Tarr uses the same actors to play similar parts in all of this movies). Still, this movie has lived in my memories ever since I first watched it. The opening slow, slow, sloooooooow pan up the front of a ship sets the tone, and by the end of it, I had surrendered to Tarr’s mastery. Two hours later, I was a happy man.

I love baseball. Played 14 seasons growing up. Even helped win some championships. Batting was always my favorite. There’s nothing more intense than standing there, staring down the pitcher, bat twisting between your palms, waiting for the ball to come whipping out of that hand at insane speeds. Fielding was good too. I mostly played pitcher, first, second, shortstop, third, left, right, and center. Plus, when my dad was the manager, every night he’d look over all of the players’ stats with me and spend hours agonizing over how to arrange the team to create the perfect fun/success ratio.

What I’m saying is, I know a thing or two about baseball, so when I go to a movie on the subject, I expect a lot, and if they don’t get it right, I’ll tear into it with a passion.

They got it right.

But then again, it almost wasn’t a baseball movie. Brad Pitt plays Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane at a time when the team’s just lost its three star players. Faced with the difficulty of getting new hotshots on a bare bones budget, Beane turns to economy major Peter Brand (Jonah Hill). Brand convinces Beane that stars don’t win games. Runs win games, and runs aren’t scored with big hits and amazing plays in the field. They’re scored by getting on base.

Beane takes this advice to heart and throws out all the conventional wisdom of baseball sages, willing to hire players who don’t know anything about fielding as long as they can take pitches and end up with a walk. Most of the film is about people who think they know baseball not believing in this new system and Beane trying to stick with it in the face of early failure. Like I said, it’s not a baseball movie.

But The Social Network was a movie about computer programming, and if they can make that exciting, I guess they can do it with anything. Brad Pitt helps with a great performance as the conflicted manager, and Jonah Hill is surprisingly good. The success of the film rests squarely on their shoulders, and while shots of endless statistics scrolling across a computer screen are a little cheesy, they’re not that bad. As the film builds up the hopelessness of being such a monetarily poor team, you can’t help but root for them. Right from the beginning, you’ll be emotionally hooked, and it won’t let up until the very end.

One of the cool differences about this underdog story is that the characters aren’t stars. The power wasn’t inside them all along. Instead, you’re rooting for the players to get walks, to get hit by pitches, to hit scrappy singles, to allow runs to score on a bunt and take the easy out. The movie gets around this by making the climax not about a championship, but about the potential for a record-breaking winning streak, and man is it exciting.

Another key difference is that, for something advertised as a pure sports drama, it’s surprisingly funny. I think I laughed harder at this than at The Hangover 2. In fact, I think it’s the funniest movie I’ve been to this year.

This movie makes you believe. It’s makes you believe on the same level as Remember the Titans or any of the great sports movies, except you believe not in the players, but in the power of statistics, and for some reason you care. When the other characters in the film refuse to believe, when they work at every opportunity to undermine and diminish our hero, Statistics, you want to punch them in their grubby little faces. I love when a film can really make me despise somebody, and Moneyball pulls it off.

If you love baseball or Brad Pitt or sports movies or economics or feeling emotions or laughing or good cinema in general, go see this movie. It’s worth your time.

I’ve seen this movie twice, once at a prescreen, and once at the theater. I have been waiting for it to come out, so that I can have a movie party for friends to come watch!

It is full of truly unpredictable twists and turns, and lots of hidden meaning and purpose.

I have heard criticism that St. Josemaria Escriva was not featured enough, and the focus was too much on the alternate character, Manolo. I disagree. As prominent as he was, St. Josemaria was, from what I ascertain, an understated though deeply interesting person, and the movie portrays this well.

I am preordering this. Now I am really looking forward to 2012!

Absolutely a chick lit adapted to a chick flick. It’s fun, questionably realistic, and likely without Oscars, but still a solid entertainment with a feel-good ending. I confess–I liked it, along with my wife. I laughed at and enjoyed this movie. I had read the book. I read other romance novels. I confess!
We attended the opening day matinee of this comedy/romance, humor foremost.
Reviews may be mixed, working mothers saying 5 stars, men voting low stars.

It is a basic adaptation of the general plot from the book “I Don’t Know How She Does It” by Allison Pearson (British author). A major change was the transformation of London, protagonist Kate Reddy’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) home, into Boston. Parker is a woman with a nice figure but with a face more like a CEO than top model; thus she fits the look of the role well–tough business figure. Now her children’s nanny (baby sitter to the American film) is hot, Paula (Jessica Szohr). Momo (Olivia Munn) is Reddy’s office assistant and also hot, plus doing well with her role. Americanization of setting for an American audience.

Pierce Brosnan (007) is Abelhammer, NYC businessman who doesn’t get as far with Kate in the movie as he did in the book. Mr. Reddy (Greg Kinnear-`The Kennedys’ as JFK) takes care of the Mr. Mom duties well. Jane Curtin as the mother-in-law is almost a cameo in the film adaptation.

It’s true the book is different from the film. Endings are different, both OK in their own way. Actually for those who liked the book, you’ll also like the movie, and you will get a bit of a surprise with the finale. You won’t know everything from reading. The book has a lot of diary-like notes, emails, and lists and the movie picks up that aspect with documentary-style character addresses facing into the camera, stop action where a character steps out of the freeze-frame for a commentary, and read-along shots of text messages, emails, and lists. One favorite film sequence was a Kate/Abelhammer bowling night out.

Even without London street vistas, it is worth a view. Also read it (hidden inside a `Braveheart’ dust jacket for men not wanting to be identified as a romantic.)

The Cameron Crow documentary captures the intensity of Pearl Jam in the early years, along with the explosion of the Seattle scene. Crows creation is fluid and the editing is creative and visually stunning. The film clearly depicts Pearl Jam’s relationship and contribution to other bands from the early ’90s. The viewer gets to know all of the original members of the band, their personalities and artistic contributions. The film does an excellent job of explaining how and why Pearl Jam survived for 20 years. As a life long Pearl Jam fan, I have to admit there were a few events in the film that I did not know about. The film is full of different emotions and I laughed more then I thought I would. Overall, a must see for anyone who grew up listening to Pearl Jam.

The trailers caught my attention long before the show began. Unfamiliar with Olyphant, never saw a Deadwood episode, nor any of his movies. After the first episode I became an Olyphant fan and have watched a lot of his previous work. This is the first TV series in years that I can’t wait ’til the next one comes on and I’m wishing the one that’s on wouldn’t end. That just doesn’t happen much anymore.

A buddy of my age group grew up in the sticks of mid-northern Florida before things heated up down there, then worked all over the south for most of his adult life and he is the only other person we know who is also in love with the show. He says it is very close to the way things really are in some of those “hollers” that he had to spend time in trying to sell his wares. Neither of us can believe this show hasn’t caught on more. It is really a hidden gem.

I think the essence of the show is in the second season when one of the State Patrol guys asks Raylan’s boss Art if Raylan can’t come with him to serve a warrant on some backwoods type. “You know, because you know these people”. Art looks at Raylan and says “Well ain’t you just the hillbilly whisperer?” It’s the Soprano’s and U.S. Marshalls set down in the hills of Kentucky. The crew has continued the gritty realism, strong dialogue, and continual movement of the story that characterized Elmore Leonard’s writing. I’s tough, knowing that the last episode this season is tomorrow night and we’ll have to wait almost a whole year to see another new episode – barring cancellation of course.

Update: 5-7-11. Watched last night’s season finale and enjoyed the little twists, even though I knew what would happen when Mags got Raylan to sit down to a drink of “Apple Pie”. Paraphrasing an Amazon reviewer of Elmore Leonard’s book “Pronto”, the only problem I have with the show is – it ended.

John Michael McDonagh’s “The Guard” proves that both talent and attitude run in the McDonagh family. Like the work of his more famous brother, Martin McDonagh, John Michael’s debut film combines familiar crime-story themes with a malicious, anarchic wit that is Irish through and through. If Quentin Tarantino ever collaborated with Roddy Doyle, the resulting movie would be a lot like the work of the McDonagh brothers.

“Thr Guard” tells the story of Sgt. Gerry Boyle of the Galway Police (Brendan Gleeson), a cop who plays by no known rules. He steals and ingests drugs from dead perps, patronizes hookers who oblige him by dressing up as policewomen, and regularly sasses his superiors. “I’m Irish–racism is part of my culture,” he says when ordered to apologize for making insensitive remarks to Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle), a visiting African-American FBI agent.

Everett is in Ireland to chase down a group of murderous drug smugglers. When Boyle’s new partner goes missing, he and Everett must work together to solve the mystery and capture the smugglers. If you’re expecting a replay of “Lethal Weapon,” forget it. McDonagh is far too cynical and worldly-wise to go in for happy endings and buddy cliches. McDonagh reveals, very casually, that Boyle’s superiors are corrupt and trying to misdirect Everett. In an American film, the corrupt cops would all be hauled away in handcuffs at the end; in “The Guard,” it gives away nothing to reveal that nothing happens to them. Life goes on, the way it always has. But Boyle–cut from the same cloth as his superiors, but refusing to play by their rules–is uniquely able to get to the bottom of the mystery, precisely because he expects no good to come from any of it.

As Boyle, Gleeson gives one of the truly great comic performances of the last decade, on a par with the ones he gave for Martin McDonagh in “Six Shooter” and “In Bruges.” He and Cheadle have wonderful screen chemistry. I only wish that the character of Everett hadn’t been so bland as written. Cheadle is incapable of giving a dull performance, but McDonagh’s writing shows far less understanding of American cops than of Irish ones. Nevertheless, there are excellent performances all around. As Boyle’s dying mother, Fionnula Flanagan is flat-out wonderful, showing the same disabused view of the world as her son. Liam Cunningham, Mark Strong and David Wilmot are a stitch as the smugglers; in the midst of their psychotic crimes, they take time out to debate whether Nietzsche or Bertrand Russell was the greater philosopher. Gorgeously photographed, wryly witty and well-paced, “The Guard” is a delightful surprise and a sardonic treat.

So, I purchased one of these from Amazon, unfortunately when I received it and unboxed everything and finally tried it out after getting batteries in it, the bubbling effect did not work. The motor whirred and the LED lights lit in the three different patterns, but there were no bubbles. Put in a call to Mattel, they had me box it up and ship it back to them, and a few weeks after that I finally have a full replacement that does everything it is supposed to. Be aware that Mattel’s replacement time is kind of long.

Anyway, my first one was partly DOA, but my review is based on the toy when it works.

I really like this toy, it was a neat idea, everything fits together nicely. However, I was sort of hoping this item would be something that could be used as a bedside nightlight, and that’s not the case. Not only does it run off of 3 AA batteries (which are not included, so be aware of that), and thus probably would not last a whole night on, but in the three different “ON” settings, none of them are entirely without bubble effects, and the motor for the pump that makes the bubbles go is fairly loud, at least loud enough that it wouldn’t be restful to sleep next to.

So, all in all, this is a great toy- definitely the most well-thought out and intricate bed in the Dead Tired series. Just be aware that it’s just a toy and can’t really effectively double as a nightlight, and you’ll need to have a bunch of AA batteries on hand for it if you or your child uses this a lot.

I found this gun a month before it came out at target. The one problem I had with it is now sold because when I bought it they didn’t sell extra ammo. This meant that I couldn’t use it in nerf wars for fear of losing a disk. That’s a shame, because this thing is amazing! If you can find a place with no wind that’s long enough it’ll probably shoot 100 feet. It is also very accurate out to about 50 feet. That’s not all, since it’s pump action and is capable of slam fire (although the slam fire is strange) it can fire off its 10 round clips with ease. The clips themselves are small enough to fit in your pocket, which is nice because the gun doesn’t have anything to hold them. Another good point is that it has yet to jam on me, and it feels durable and well made when you hold it. Finally, when the stock is off, it’s actually rather compact. So, at $25, this is a bargain.

Between my kids and I, we have all of the vortex blasters. I have been a fan of nerf guns since I was little, and am impressed with this new line. They are durable, shoot far, and accurately. The disk does have a bit of ‘zing’ to it; you will feel it if it hits you, especially at close range, but this is the trade-off for longer range. They also ricochet, off of almost everything! The neat side to this, is that you can now try to bounce shots off walls, etc. The downside, is that the little discs end up in the darndest places… Out of the vortex line, this is my favourite. The magazines feed reliably, overall awesome blaster!

The first thing that hits me, is that it contains this cool playmat instead of the boring cardboard other games have. This alone let it stand out to all the other games. But after I played it I came to recognize how much thought went into this game.

1) The players have limited resources. When they are all up, they can’t get more. This gives tension and makes every encounter with a zombie count, as you can’t throw out all your cards at once, as you have no chance otherwise.
2) The game is constantly hard. No build up and working to an final encounter. The hardest zombies can come up in the first round and they stay this way till the end. It get’s even harder due to the limited resources and due to the fact that…
3) Players who run out of red-shirt allies get turned into zombies themselves and try to stop the remaining players. So no sitting next to the others and waiting that the game finishes. And team Zombie can even still win the game. That’s an amazing part, as it allows me to win the game at the end with a different objective than at the start of the game.

Although this game has a lot of cooperative elements, in the end you still try to be the one who comes out victorious over the others. I had a blast playing this game.

Please bear in mind I am not a professional reviewer or experience Blackberry user. I am a technophile with some BB knowledge.

HARDWARE:
Body is slim and sleek, nice lines and curves. It easily fits in the pocket. Slimmer and lighter than my mothers previous 8330, I think she will like it. Buttons seem a tad smaller than previous Curves, but still easy to press. The menu buttons also have a nice click to them even though they are flat and flush with the body.
This was my first time using the newer trackpad on blackberry’s and it was nice. Seems a little weird at first but it actually better when you become accustomed to it. Center button clicks nicely and no accidentally rolling around when you try to hit it. Camera and volume rockers are also the newer style, built into the body. They press easily as does the top lock button, also built in (not sticking out). Call quality is good, as can be expected on BB’s. Camera is OK but I dont put much stock in phone cameras so am not inclined to thoroughly test them. Screen is absolutely gorgeous. Brighter than any other BB I’ve seen except the Torch. Colors are nice, resolution is good enough for pics and video. Havent tried any games since I would need a BB account and this is going to be a gift anyway. WIFI is fast but not all the apps seem to take advantage of it (more on that later). Tmobiles 3G is properly taken advantage of but of course, your mileage may vary. I dont know if this unit supports AT&T’s 3G network.
I love having a multicolored indicator light on the top, wish more phones would do that.
Battery strength is as good or better than any other Blackberry, it charges quickly as well. Got a full days use but not using GPS, Bluetooth or NFC. In fact I havent seen any stores or found anyone else using a phone with NFC, so theres no way to tell how good it is.

SOFTWARE:

I am not an expert on BB OS 7 but I can see the differences. Main screen is less cluttered but you can still see all the important items. Accessing settings and finding the essentials is easier than ever. In particular, disabling all or individual radios is much simpler now. Settings menu is also less cluttered and you can do more without digging into as many subsections. Your home screens of icons can be customized a lot compared to earlier versions of BB OS. You can set up as many custom screens as you like. Scrolling through items is always very smooth, due in part to the new OS and faster hardware. Everything looks a little nicer, easier on the eyes without seeming too cute for a proper business phone. The email is unified and looks nice. Blackberry messenger is much sleeker and easier to use, but I dont think is integrated with the other messaging programs. Social networking is also unified though you can choose to use individual apps for twitter and facebook and others. Everything is a little easier to use than in previous versions. The youtube app is really just a link to the mobile web page. Vids do look good especially for being on a small screen. Audio is acceptable over the speaker but if you plan on seriously using this thing for music and vids you should probably plug in the headphones. All the usual apps are here like To do and memo and Office to go. Most of them seem to be improved a little, easier to see important stuff and create new documents. You can even create PP presentations from scratch which is something office apps for other platforms lack. There is a file browser (at least on the unlocked phone I purchased) but it only allows you to view media files you’ve copied over or documents you’ve created. Only power users will care about that but it should be noted. Voice notes work well, as does the password protector app.
Games look great but only 2 are included and you need a BB account to get any more, even the free ones.
Search is now universal like on most modern smartphones, and its also easy to specify where you wish to search (web, local device, contacts, emails, etc.) A VERY nice touch to serious BB users who have tons of junk and cant always make time to sift through it. Big improvement here and RIM should be proud.
Theres also some basic network diagnostic tools which is nice to see, again mostly for power users, but also good if your IT person is trying to setup your corporate phone and doesnt want to download additional apps for this.

NITPICKS:
Box did not include a nice protective case like the last BB curve I bought. But they did include a 4gig micro SD card and it was already installed. No self-portrait mirror on the back but it did have a flash which not all BB’s use, even some of the newer models.
Battery case was weird to get off. It would seem theres a little indentation on one side of the body that you gotta dig in to pop off the back. Almost ripped the body apart before I figured out how to work it, even with the little picture showing me the process. My last Curve had a little button you could press easily to make the back open. You can access the SD card while the phone is on but I think it gets upset if you do.
Apparently the new OS 7 lacks backward compatibility with old apps, which is nice if you thought blackberry needed a total refresh but if you have a bunch of old stuff (especially paid) you may be unhappy with the change and lack of modern apps in the market. It will take time for developers to catch up.

The Curve 8330 lets you specify cellular only, prefer cellular, prefer wifi, or wifi only. I couldnt find such a setting on the new OS, and in fact when there no cell coverage (which can happen with TMobile) it doesnt seem to want to use the Wifi at all. When trying to use the web or mobile store it gives me troubles, complains theres no data service even though I can clearly see its connected my home wifi. This is actually a serious issue and not a nitpick. Needs to be corrected.

Overall a great update to the Curve line. If you love Blackberry’s and like the small Curve you will love this one. Latest OS and new apps plus advanced stuff like NFC make this a winner. BUT, if you still prefer iphones or Androids this wont likely encourage you to switch. Experienced users will appreciate that it feels basically the same but with plenty of improvements, newcomers will like how simple and neat everything is compared to a messy Android desktop.
